My Favourite Things To Grow In My Garden.

5–7 minutes

So recently within the past year I’ve become so enamored with the idea of having my own garden thanks to TikTok, and my dad had built raised garden beds back in around 2019 – it was a perfect situation. However, this is the first year that I’ve really taken an interest in it. And within my few months of gardening, I’ve come to like certain vegetables over others. So I present to you, my list of favourite things I’ve grown so far along with some others that I want to attempt in the future.

If you have a garden of your own, feel free to comment what your favourites are! I love hearing about what everyone likes to grow 😀

Onions

These were my favourite to pull from the garden this year. I totally should’ve left them for longer (ours weren’t that big sadly) but to be fair, I’ve seen a few people say that onions are good to pick once the foliage starts to fall over and can no longer support itself – which is exactly what was happening to mine.

Our onions took 12-14 days to sprout but take 60-80 days to fully grow. I guess when I picked mine we were nowhere near the 60 day mark. But there’s always next year’s growing season.

Will I be planting these again? Definitely. But I now know to leave them in for longer – probably the same amount of time as the potatoes. This was our first time trying onions. The experience was amazing but I definitely want a more bountiful individual harvest next time.

Radishes

Now I’ve tried about two radishes from the garden and no hate, no shade, no shame to anyone who does like radishes but I personally cannot stand the taste of radishes. But I absolutely loved harvesting these little suckers. They grew so quickly and it was hard to keep on top of planting more seeds so that we would always have radishes.

We had both regular sized radishes and then jumbo radishes but honestly, the size difference wasn’t that huge. The only thing that I noticed was different was the size of the stem – the regular default radishes’ stems weren’t that large in length but the jumbo radishes’ stems were huge.

Will I be planting these again? Yes. My dad is the only one that eats them in my household and I like to think that even when I do live on my own that I would still be growing radishes to give them to my neighbours. I just love growing these little guys but cannot stand the taste myself.

Cucumbers

This year our cucumber plants literally took over the one garden bed so I will definitely make sure that we’re smart about the location of the cucumbers next year. We planted our seedlings next to the peas, beans and carrots but sadly the pea plants died the minute the cucumbers started to grow – I think they were battling it out for the nutrients and unfortunately the cucumbers won. We also very unlucky with our carrot harvest, all of our carrots were very pathetic.

I think we had around 10-15 cucumbers that we harvested total from this year’s growing season which isn’t a lot but for us it’s more than enough – it’s not like we’re farmers that need to mass produce. The amount that we had was the perfect amount for the four of us – we probably could’ve given a few to the neighbours too.

Will I be planting these again? Hell yes. Cucumbers are one of my favourite veggies and I can’t get enough of them. Ours we’re actually turned out to be bigger than the typical cucumber you’d find at the grocery store (not to flex but to flex).

Peas

If I’m being honest, the only reason why I grow these is so that I can eat them right off the stem. I have never cooked my own peas – they’re too good just off the stem. I genuinely can’t get enough of these and wish our plants produced more this year.

Will I be planting these again? Yes of course. I will always have peas in my garden, the taste is just immaculate – I love them so fricken much. I’m making a mental note to buy more seedlings next year though because the rate that these grew at was too slow for my liking.

Potatoes

This is the first year we have ever done potatoes and I’d say we were decently successful. They totally could’ve used like 2-3 more weeks of growing time but again, that’s completely my fault. I saw that you’re supposed to harvest potatoes when the foliage starts dying and starts to brown – which ours were doing – but what I didn’t realize is that only parts of the foliage was dying… guess I should’ve waited for the whole stem to start dying but oh well.

We put our potatoes in grow bags and it was probably a wise decision. We put 3 seed potatoes in each grow bag (we have 4 grow bags total) and we harvested about 20 so far from just two grow bags. There is this one spot in this one garden bed where we put the leftover potatoes and I have yet to see the foliage start dying so I’ve no clue how well those are doing.

Will I be planting these again? 100% yes. They were so fun to harvest and my family is a huge potato loving family so we will definitely be eating these up left, right and centre. We had our little potato friends for dinner the other night and they were pretty good – a little on the smaller side but personally I’m not complaining.

Overall, I think all of these veggies did amazing this year and I can’t wait for next year’s season to do it all over again. I also would really love to get into hydroponics so that we can grow over the long Canadian winter, but sadly we just don’t have the space. I’m still holding out hope for someday though 😀

  1. Love the cucumber flex. Personally, I enjoy growing tomatoes and zucchini as ours always turn out amazing.
