Tips for Finding New Songs and Artists

5–7 minutes

If you’re like me and love spending your spare time looking for new music, but feel like you’ve discovered every artist under the sun, fret no longer – I have a solution.

I’ve been using these tips for a few years now and hope they help you as much as they’ve helped me. And who knows, you might even find your new favourite artist.

I’ve broken this up into different categories for each streaming platform, so feel free to scroll through to find your section :))

Spotify

I personally use both Apple Music and Spotify but I find that Spotify has a better discovery algorithm than any other music streaming service. So I end up using Spotify to find new music and then transfer my playlists to Apple Music for the better streaming quality.

The thing I love most about Spotify is their ability to suggest you songs that perfectly align with your preferred genre by using your listening history. Take me for example; I’m a huge indie lover, so my Spotify-made playlists will feature mainly indie artists with songs that match my listening history.

Anyways, there’s a few different Spotify-made playlists I use to find new music and highly suggest you do the same.

I would link the Spotify-made playlists but unfortunately they open up my playlists instead of your own. To find your Spotify-made playlists, just type the name of the playlist into Spotify’s search bar.

Release Radar

Your is a Release Radar weekly playlist that updates every Friday at midnight local time with new music that’s released since the previous Friday. Each release radar playlist has 30 songs on it, you’re sure to find at least one new good song.

I’m actually really bad at listening to this each week and I usually only catch this playlist about one or two times in a month. But when I do listen, I always find about 10 new songs to add to playlists I’ve made myself.

Discover Weekly

Similarly, your Discover Weekly has the same vibe except this one updates every Monday and features new songs from all time. So the songs featured on this playlist are new to you, but might’ve been released a few years ago.

Again, I’m really bad at listening to this one, but it’s always so much fun trying to find new songs.

Fresh Finds

If you’re looking for new-to-you music and not newly released music, the fresh finds playlist might match your vibe more.

Fresh Finds has the same idea as the last two playlists except this one doesn’t update every week. This playlist has 200 songs by indie artists and labels, and gets updated frequently.

It’s definitely taken me some time to work through this entire playlist but I’ve found some amazing songs that I’ve added into my current rotation, so I hope this playlist is able to do the same for you.

Daylist

The last playlist you can use to discover new songs is your daylist. This one updates every few hours and typically uses songs you’ve added to other playlists, with a select few new songs sprinkled in.

Your daylist is the perfect mood playlist so if you’re a mood-listener, definitely check out your daylist.

Apple Music

Apple Music’s algorithm has definitely gotten better as the years have gone by, but I’ve gotten so accustomed to Spotify’s algorithm that I haven’t made an attempt to re-acclimatize myself with Apple Music’s.

That being said however, before I started using Spotify I tried my hardest to make it work within Apple Music and infrequently found success. Apple Music used to recommend similar artists instead of similar songs.

So if I were to listen to Ariana Grande for example, they would recommend I listen to other main pop artists – who all have their own vibe and sound – whereas I was looking for similar sounding songs or similar vibes.

Regardless, I’ve found a select few good playlists for new music within Apple Music.

Made for You Mixes

This is a series of multiple playlists catered to your music taste – and there’s so many that it’d be redundant to list them all – but I highly recommend spending time listening to each one.

I mainly listen to my New Music Mix (which is similar to the Release Radar), Chill Mix, and Heavy Rotation mixes – all of which feature 25 songs.

And this should come to no surprise, I’m bad at listening to these every week, but when I do, I usually find at least 5 new songs to add to my library.

New Music Daily

A regularly updated playlist with newly released music, packed to the brim with new songs – there’s 130 in this one – so you’re sure to find something in this one as well.

The only downside about this playlist is that I’m pretty sure this one is not curated using your listening history, so it’s one universal playlist for everyone no matter what. But if you’re someone who likes listening to a wide variety of genres, New Music Daily might be the better playlist for you.

Spotalike

If sifting through playlists isn’t your vibe, you will love this website.

You just have to paste the link to a song from Spotify and Spotalike will give you a playlist packed with 50 songs with a similar sound, style, and vibe to your pasted song. They have a feature where you can add your playlist directly to your spotify which is super handy.

Skiley

Essentially like Spotalike, Skiley does the same thing but with a few extra features – and I highly recommend taking advantage of them.

With Skiley, you can create a discover weekly archive that saves all of your discover weekly playlists into one playlist – which has been so incredibly helpful, so that I’m able to go back on my own time and not miss out on potential new favourite songs.

They also have a discover daily playlist that makes a playlist full of new songs based on your listening history. It’s super cool, and you’re really missing out if you’re as big of a music lover as I am.

I hope you’re able to find your new favourite songs or artists with these tips and that they help you fall even more in love with music.

I’d love to know if you stumble across songs for yourself- I’m always looking for new music myself – so please leave a comment and I’ll give em a listen!

See you in the next
